Dachshund Info
According to the AKC Standard, "the Dachshund should be low to the ground, with a long body and short legs with robust muscle.
He should be clever, lively and courageous. He is a loving and affectionate family dog. He is not suited to be an outdoor pet. Though small, he will bark to alert you of anything he see as a potential threat."
All of these things describes just what to look for should you decide to add a Dachshund to your home as a pet. They are delightful and entertaining. I fell in love with the breed with the first one I owned. He was funny, loving and a great bedwarmer, as well as an alert system to anything he heard that might be concerning.
Be cautious when choosing your puppy. It is always advantageous to see parents and go to the place you plan to purchase your pup. It is especially nice if you get to see other offspring, or older siblings or grandparents. All of these thing help to assure you that you are buying from a breeder who knows the background and cares about their dogs. I do not recommend buying a pup sight unseen, whether it be due to shipping, or meeting the Seller just to pick up your pup. It is always better to see where your pup came from!
Their grooming requirements are few. A bath as needed, nails trimmed, ears cleaned, and regular brushing for the longhair types.
Of course, a Veterinarian whom you trust is your most valuable resource. Always follow their recommendation as to healthcare updates and any special concerns and additional vaccines which may be needed in your area.
If you enjoy reading, this is a great book about the background and history of the Dachshund breed.
